The 1956 Mad Race Across Africa: The Third Cape to Algiers Rally Through the Eyes of the Co-Winners
Some people find incredible adventures to enrich their lives. Josh and Wyn Haldeman were exceptional at this, and made their motto, Live Dangerously, Carefully, a reality. Along with their flying adventures to over 80 countries, and their sixteen searches for the Lost City of the Kalahari, they also managed to be the co-winners of the 1956 Cape To Algiers Rally.
A drive at your own pace across this immense continent would be challenging enough. To have to maintain minimum speeds over some of the worst roads in the world, often in challenging weather conditions, was madness. Taking on the jungles, the mountains and the vast Sahara Desert would be no joke. In 1956, with miniscule support, the inexperienced Haldemans came out as cowinners competing with a professional rally driver. As Josh mentioned to the family at times: We had to race all day and then weld the car back together every night.
Africa was also amid change and turmoil. This book brings Josh and Wyn’s story to life, enhancing the tale with mainly Wyn’s slide images, as well as modern tools now available. It also briefly looks at the colonial changes that were starting to take place at the same time.
