This 1889 English colonial novel describes the adventures of a party of Englishmen who travel up the Congo and Kasai Rivers in what was then the Congo Free State, to rescue a party of Portuguese traders held captive by an African tribe, in a city build of amber. Featuring outlandish technologies, including a steam-powered, armored ship, and published under a pseudonym (Thomas Vetch), the text is the work of the pioneering electrotherapist, biomedical engineer and occultist Arthur Edmund Baines (1855-c. 1935), and sheds light on Baines' early career as a cartographer and telegraphy engineer, working in Africa, as well as on his time as an editor of English trade periodicals for electrical engineers.
